Cancellation and changes
Plans change, and mountains close roads. This page says plainly what happens to your money when either does.

1. If you cancel
Tell us in writing, to concierge@shunyaway.com. The date we receive it is the date that counts.
| Notice given | Refunded |
|---|---|
| More than 90 days before departure | To be confirmed |
| 90 to 60 days before departure | To be confirmed |
| 60 to 30 days before departure | To be confirmed |
| Fewer than 30 days before departure | To be confirmed |
Two things sit outside any refund band, and we would rather be blunt about them now than at the moment you cancel:
- Air tickets already issued follow the airline’s own rules. Where a fare is refundable we recover what we can and pass all of it to you; where it is not, it is lost — which is one reason a flexible cabin is sometimes worth its price.
- Non-refundable supplier deposits — a palace suite in season, a private camp, a permit already paid for. We will show you the actual supplier invoice rather than assert a figure.
2. If you change rather than cancel
Moving dates, changing the party size or altering the route is not a cancellation and we do not treat it as one. We re-quote the journey, show you what changed, and carry over what can be carried. If a change effectively replaces the journey with a different one close to departure, we will say so plainly rather than absorb a loss quietly and resent it.
3. If we cancel
If we cancel a journey for any reason within our control, you may take a full refund of everything paid to us, or move to another date at no charge. We refund by the route the money arrived, within 14 days.
If a journey becomes unsafe or impossible — a road gone, a shrine closed early by snow, an epidemic, a government restriction — we will offer an alternative journey of equivalent standard, a new date, or a refund of everything we have not already irrecoverably paid to a supplier on your behalf. We will show you what those payments were.
4. Insurance
Travel insurance is a condition of booking, and cancellation cover is the part of it that matters most here. Almost everything that makes a person cancel a journey of this kind — illness, bereavement, a family emergency — is covered by a policy and is not covered by us. Buy it when you book, not before you fly.
5. Refunds in practice
- Refunds go back the way the money came, in the currency it was paid in.
- Bank charges and exchange movement between payment and refund are not ours to control.
- We do not charge an administration fee for cancelling. Suppliers may, and those we pass on at cost.
